The Oscar nomination came out today. It's a good crop of movies this year and I thought most of the nominations were correct.
Best picture
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire
A good list here. I could have been happy with Gran Torino making this list or even a nod to the Dark Knight, but all in all a good list. I think Slumdog wins this.
Best actor
Richard Jenkins - The Visitor
Frank Langella - Frost/Nixon
Sean Penn - Milk
Brad Pitt - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Mickey Rourke - The Wrestler
I'm super excited that Richard Jenkins got a nod for The Visitor. I would have liked to see Clint Eastwood make this list, probably in place of Pitt in Benjamin Button, but oh well. Mickey is going to win this. I don't even think it's much of a toss up.
Best actress
Anne Hathaway - Rachel Getting Married
Angelina Jolie - Changeling
Melissa Leo - Frozen River
Meryl Streep - Doubt
Kate Winslet - The Reader
I need to see Frozen River. I was shocked that Kira Knightly didn't get a nod for the Dutchess. I would have given Meryl Streeps spot to her, since I didn't think Streeps performance in Doubt was all that. But, so be it. I think Anne Hathaway wins this. Of all the performance on this list, I think her performance there was most Oscar worthy.
Best supporting actress
Amy Adams - Doubt
Penelope Cruz - Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Viola Davis - Doubt
Taraji P Henson - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Marisa Tomei - The Wrestler
If there is any justice in the world, Marisa Tomei will win this, but to be honest I can't see the academy giving it to her for the stripper with a heart of gold, or actually in this case, a heart of iron. After all, Elizebeth Shue didn't win for Leaving Las Vegas... Any way. I think it's an open category. If you put a gun to my head, I suppose Amy Adams will get the nod from Doubt. We'll see.
Best supporting actor
Josh Brolin - Milk
Robert Downey Jr - Tropic Thunder
Philip Seymour Hoffman - Doubt
Heath Ledger - The Dark Knight
Michael Shannon - Revolutionary Road
Hard to argue anyone but Ledger here. He got ripped for what I thought was the acting performance of the decade in Brokeback Mountain and his Joker made the entire movie in Batman. He get's this one.
Best adapted screenplay
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Doubt
Frost/Nixon
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire
Best original screenplay
Happy-Go-Lucky
Milk
Wall-E
In Bruges
Frozen River
I'm happy to see In Bruges get a nod here. That was a quirky little film about assissins on the run in the best preserved medevil town in Europe was both funny and witty. Slumdog probably wins for adaption and I'll say Milk for original.
